Excellent global performance even on difficult-to-tag materials ![]() ![]() Because of the confidence this gives you, you find yourself not feeling the need to really “plan” ahead an idea comes to you “in the mix”, and you can do it spontaneously. (You can of course turn off all the other elements, but they’re still “looping” in the background.)Īnd if you do get “out of your depth”, by simple disengaging the master effect, returning all filters to 12 o’clock, and pushing the four faders for the deck to maximum, you’re back with the full, unaltered stereo mix. This keeps it simple enough to understand at all times. You simply can’t, for instance, decide to loop just the bassline, or just the vocal, like you can in Remix Decks when it comes to where you actually are in a track, it’s one place and one place alone. Ultimately, I think the reason for that is that temporally, the tracks play as they were intended. But here’s the important thing: It never becomes overwhelming. When you start combining ideas like the above with loops, cues and so on, and it becomes extremely addictive. Being able to individually turn off/on, filter and add FX to four parts of a track opens up a whole – and highly addictive – new way of DJing. If you want to extend the length of a mix over minutes not seconds, it’s suddenly simple to swap the beats over while leaving the rest of a song playing, so when you finally switch melody from one to the next, the beat has already “won over” your crowd. Get a couple of songs in compatible keys, and the same goes for basslines or vocals. It is ridiculously easy to swap the beat from one song for that from another, for instance. The fun really starts, though, when you are mixing with a bunch of Stems files. Want an instant dub mix? Then you can add a long post-fade echo to a vocal, strip the track back to drums and bassline, and flick in the odd word or sentence from the full song – done! You can get instant acapellas, instant instrumentals, and so on. ![]() So from a creative point of view, they’re great fun right from the off. The first impression is, basically, that a child could work out how these work in seconds… and to us, that’s exactly the kind of thing you want when DJing. So to set up, you just plug a controller that works with Stems (currently, the Traktor Kontrol S8, Traktor Kontrol D2, and Traktor Kontrol F1) into a laptop running the new Traktor 2.9, load a Stems file onto a deck, and move the four faders for that deck to control the volumes. The file appear just like normal music files, and even when loaded onto hardware/software that can play them properly, everything is pretty much immediately intuitive. While Remix Decks are certainly powerful and interesting, we ultimately found them unintuitive and over-complicated, with large preparation involved and a lot of concentration while DJing not to mess your performance up.įrankly, Stems couldn’t be more different. When we first heard about Stems, we were excited in a way which truth be told we struggled to be with Remix Decks, the last attempt at changing how DJs play from Native Instruments. The clear desire is that it will be adopted by the wider community and become an accepted and established new file format. It’s also important to note that this is an open-source platform, meaning Native Instruments is giving it free to any software or hardware makers who wish to use it: There’s no licensing or restrictions on it. Look out for the logo: NI is hoping this format will become as ubiquitous as the MP3.Īt launch, Native Instruments has promised hundreds of files available from many labels across a whole host of online retailers, but clearly the hope is that when the Stems Creator Tool becomes available later this summer, that number will swell as producers big and small start mixing their tracks down into this format for DJs to use. It’s only when you load a Stems file into compatible DJ software / hardware that it becomes more than a “normal” music file. That means that Stems files behave just like MP3s, in that you can download, audition, play and transfer them among all your devices, and play them back just like you would any other music file (assuming your devices can play MP4, which most modern music software and hardware can). As well as each of the four separate parts of the track, it also contains a full stereo mix. While Stems officially launches today, we’ve been playing with the hardware and software for a few weeks, and so today offer you a full and complete review, including two talkthrough videos. The DJ can adjust the volumes of each part individually, and apply filters and FX too. With compatible DJ hardware and software, Stems files give the user independent control over four parts of a track (for instance drums, bass, synth and vocal). Stems is an audio file format developed by Native Instruments for DJs. ![]() Instead of paying $19.99 per month for 3GB or $27.99 per month for 5GB, I recommend checking out Mint Mobile, Boost Mobile or Visible for a cheap monthly phone plan. ![]() Verity has been a technology journalist for 15 years, starting her career working for the rather questionably named "Boys Toys" magazine, before its editor moved to an up-and-coming website called Pocket-lint, and brought her on board as staff writer. Whether you spend that on one of Samsung's QD-OLED TVs or its Neo QLED (Mini LED) displays will be down to personal preference - you can read our guide to TV tech to help you understand the differences and the benefits, and help you choose. Still for most people, the best 4K TV your budget can stretch to is going to be our recommendation. They're considerably cheaper now, while stocks last, and the tech on board isn't hugely different to this year's TVs. If 8K intrigues you but your budget is a little more humble, it might be worth looking at last year's sets. That is undeniably great, but of course comes at a cost - so you'll need a big budget to make 8K a reality in your house. There is next to no native content that can make the most of all those extra pixels just yet, so for now you'll be relying on the upscaling technology. How to choose the right Samsung TV for youĪs we mentioned above, Samsung sells a TV using just about every kind of TV technology going, offering up OLED sets via its QD-OLED range, its Neo QLED range - which uses Mini LED technology, and probably one of the broadest 8K TVs ranges you can buy.įor us, the benefits of 8K TVs are there but still a little limited to recommend on a wide scale. This set gets OTS+ instead of Pro, with eight speakers offering 70W of sound in an Atmos-supporting 4.2.2 channel configuration. You'll take a step down in the sound capabilities though. The design here is called the Infinity One, and has a very slight black matrix around the edge of the picture that the Infinity screen doesn't, but because the One Connect box is still supported here, the TV is suitably slim and great for wall mounting. There are also some subtle design changes, for those looking carefully. Depending on prices, you might feel like the trade off is worth it. That's still a very bright screen, and with support for ALLM and VRR alongside 4K/120Hz video, should still be great for gamers. The biggest differences here are you'll lose the 144Hz refresh rate in exchange for a 120Hz capability and it'll also be less bright too with fewer dimming zones - Samsung told us to expect peak brightness to be around 2000 nits. The smaller two sizes (43 and 50 inches) keep PC gamers on side, with support for 4K/144Hz, but it drops to a 120Hz panel in the other sizes, so 4K/120Hz gaming is still covered across the range with support for VRR and ALLM.Ī step down from the QN900C is the QN800C, which is still an 8K Neo QLED panel with the more advanced Neural Quantum Processor of its big brother, but with a few tweaks. That usually suggests that the company thinks this will be a popular model, so here's hoping the pricing fits accordingly. This model comes in a fair range of sizes, including 43, 50, 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches. We've seen it in action, and it really does make a big difference. This is the model where Samsung's anti-reflection technology kicks in, so if you have a really bright room, you might want to focus your money here or on the model above to help combat that. Screen sizes: 43, 50, 55, 65, 75 and 85 inchesĪs mentioned above, the number of dimming zones in the QN90C will halve compared with the QN95C, and that will obviously have an impact on brightness - though exactly how big that impact will be, we don't know just yet.If that's important to you, you'll need to consider the 8K range or the S95C QD-OLED. There is no One Connect Box here this year - and in fact, there are no One Connect Boxes throughout the whole of 2023's Neo QLED/QLED ranges. ![]() ![]() There’s a 4.2.2-channel setup here, powered by 70W of amplification and Dolby Atmos support. It uses Samsung's Object Tracking Sound Plus audio system, with speakers placed around the TV frame. There are double the dimming zones here compared with the model below, the QN90C, as well as improved sound. It includes Samsung's anti-reflection technology too, which should improve the appearance of reflections in bright rooms. If you don't want 8K and you don't want QD-OLED, the QN95C is Samsung's flagship 4K Neo QLED Mini LED TV for 2023 - though it won't be available in all regions.Īvailable in 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches, it brings a 144Hz panel for all the gaming goodness you could wish for, with 14-bit contrast mapping for bringing out even more detail in a scene. ![]() Windows apps can launch directly from Dock, Spotlight, or Launchpad and, once running, can be viewed in Exposé, Spaces, and Mission Control just as if they were Mac apps. ![]() Now available in all Fusion editions.įusion’s Unity View Mode hides the Windows desktop so you can run Windows apps just like Mac apps. Overall, we were impressed with this light, stoked on its mobile charging, and would recommend it to anyone looking for an awesome, durable, high-quality solar lantern. But considering that you get a solar lantern and a solar charger in one, it’s not a bad deal. It’s also the priciest as of this writing. The cons? It’s heaviest lantern we tested. If you want to have the capability to occasionally top up your electronics throughout a trip, the Luci Pro’s charger does the trick. We suspect that it was because it wasn’t drawing enough power from the weak early-winter sun at the time. Its mobile charging could be a little finicky, and there were a couple of times, charging under the sun, where we couldn’t get it to register on our phone. Even when completely drained, the Luci Pro could charge a phone from sunlight alone. That may not sound super impressive, but it’s twice what the other mobile charging lantern (the Suaoki) could handle. When fully charged, the Luci Pro gave a 34% boost to a phone in 1 hour and 32 min before being completely drained. While the mobile charging capabilities can’t really compare to a dedicated solar charger or portable battery pack, it still impressed us. We also loved that its handle can unsnap, allowing for easier hanging. It would charge itself up enough to run for a few minutes just from ambient light and indirect sunlight indoors. We were also impressed with how quickly its solar panel charged. Its warm white LEDs put out a comfortable, diffused light with great ambiance. However, we found ourselves using its lower settings more often, especially in the tent. This light has it all: great features, excellent ambiance and light quality, a quick-charging and efficient solar panel, and surprisingly decent mobile charging capabilities.Īt 150 lumens, the Luci Pro was the brightest lantern that we tested.
